Olivine roof membranes are a new technology which has been developed by alumasc. This tech works to help buildings achieve greater reductions in CO2 output, by using a material called Olivine, which, when hit by rain, will cause a chemical reaction which neutralises the CO2 in the atmosphere that it comes in contact with, converting that CO2 into Oxygen.
This new technology has been making a lot of waves in the construction industry, but is that enthusiasm really deserved? When you look at the effectiveness of the material, the effect is very minimal, very close in comparison to a green roof. The main advantage is the relatively low maintenance required for Olivine technology when compared to green roofing, but green roofs also have their advantages as well. Besides the aesthetic advantages of green roofs, you also stop the heat absorption caused by black / off-black roofing.
