Single Ply, Built-up-felt and fibre glass roofing are of the three most popular roofing systems throughout the UK. However, in recent years and with the push on becoming ‘greener’ some organisations and home owners have opted to install a green roof, otherwise known as a roof garden.
These systems can somewhat be complicated and require meticulous planning to ensure risk is low of any potential collapse or structural damage.
Roof gardens that use soil as the growing medium require an effective drainage system to keep off rainwater from seeping into the building and to ensure the weight of the roof fluctuates through a safe zone. Upmost care must be sought before installing these type of systems on listed buildings where foundation materials could be too old and fragile to support this heavy system.
However, once a roofing contractor have calculated appropriately the tensile properties of a construction, the benefits that can be reaped from a roof garden is immense with the likes of improving air quality, providing additional space for employee’s / office staff and more.
