Roof lights seem to be an ever more popular trend when it comes to designing a home, and many people are eager to install one within their home. The flip side to this is that many don’t realise that the installation of roof lights is actually regulated, and may require planning permission.

The good news is that the installation of roof lights and skylights generally doesn’t require any planning permission, but there are instances where it is required, namely when;

  • they do not protrude more than 150mm beyond the plane of the roof slope
  • they are no higher than the highest part of the roof
  • if they are in side elevation roof slope they must be obscure-glazed and either non opening or more than 1.7 metres above the floor level

So long as none of these describes what you’ve planned, it should be perfectly fine for you to install a roof light.
