When choosing a style of roofing, there are many factors to consider. Aesthetics is one factor along with durability, style and finish. Some people tend to go for a pitched roof in order to stick to their current style, however, more and more people are choosing to turn to GRP flat roofing, a more cost-effective and arguable more durable solution.
Glass Reinforced Plastic or GRP is a special type of laminate that is formed by using a polyester resin that is subsequently reinforced by strands of glass fibres (fibreglass). It is a composite material that is very light but also has a huge amount of strength. Its development in 1938 led to it being used extensively for water containers and boats but has since become a material that is very widely used in buildings, including for roofing.
GRP material is lightweight and flexible, and it’s fully reinforced characteristic makes for a material that is highly waterproof make it an ideal building material for use in flat roofing. It is also capable of being moulded into any shape and this gives it a versatility that is hard to beat.
GRP flat roofing combines several materials that can include board decking, resins and fibreglass matting. Its mouldability allows it to be formed into preformed trims and other products that are needed to make fully usable and serviceable roofs.
How it’s made
- Flat roofs have to start with ceiling joists and roof decking of well-seasoned wood.
- A layer of resin which is mixed with hardener is then applied over this sturdy base.
- The resin takes on a jelly-like consistency in 15 minutes and hardens in 30 to 40 minutes.
- Once this is hardened, a layer of fibreglass matting is laid over the catalysed resin, and another layer of catalysed resin is added to complete the GRP flat roof.
- Finally, a top coat resin that has fire retardant qualities then makes the flat roof completely waterproof.
Once finished it is necessary and recommended to fit drip trims and edge trims to roofs. This is usually made from the same material as what’s laid down before the GRP process takes place.
Is GRP Roofing Durable?
GRP flat roofs can last for 30 years or more without showing any signs of deterioration. They would normally not require any repairs during this period unless their surfaces are submitted to some form of abuse.
GRP flat roofs are impact-resistant, remain unaffected by ultraviolet rays, though there can be some fading. Colours can be added in the resins and give them an aesthetically pleasing appearance. Any loss of colour can always be combated by applying a fresh topcoat.
Do GRP Roofs Leak?
GRP flat roofs will not leak unless the original workmanship is at fault. Damaged roofs can easily be repaired by adding fresh layers of resins and patching up any holes or openings created. GRP flat roofs are seamless and will have no gaps or joints that often make roofs vulnerable. They easily maintain their form and function even during the most severe storms.
